What Does the Name Willow Mean?
Willow’s verified meaning, as recorded by Behind the Name, is: “The willow tree, known for its slender, drooping branches.” Its origin is an English word name, from Old English welig. The meaning above is the verified literal one, not a personality guess. The tree’s image does all the work in this name: long, flexible branches that bend in the wind instead of breaking.
The name has a very public feline namesake: Willow, the grey tabby adopted by Jill Biden, became the White House cat in 2022, named, fittingly, after Willow Grove in Pennsylvania. A farm kitten who jumped up mid-interview and never really left, she gave the name a face: green eyes, grey stripes, and complete composure under pressure.
What Kind of Cat Suits the Name Willow?
Willow suits graceful, long-bodied, gentle cats, and, after its most famous bearer, grey tabbies wear it beautifully. It is a soft name rather than a cute one: two liquid syllables that sound like the tree looks. Serene adults carry it best, though it settles happily onto a calm kitten.
It is pronounced “WIL-oh.” Willow shortens naturally to Will in everyday use, which gives a graceful name a friendly everyday gear. It is overwhelmingly a female name in the popularity data, in the same botanical family as Hazel, Ivy and Daisy.
How Popular Is Willow for Cats?
Willow is top-tier, not trending-scrap: Rover ranks it #9 on the combined list and #7 among female cats, and U.S. News places it at #12. That is three separate top-fifteen finishes for a single tree, Willow is simply one of the most-chosen cat names there is.
