Blue Name Meaning: What Does Blue Mean for a Cat?

Blue means the colour blue, a calm, classic word-name that in cat language has a precise meaning of its own: a blue cat is a grey cat.

What Does the Name Blue Mean?

Blue is the English colour word, used as a name exactly as it stands. Wiktionary treats it plainly as the colour, and lists its variant spelling Blu separately. No saint, no myth, no hidden root, Blue is one of the oldest kinds of pet name there is: a description that became a name through love and repetition.

The twist is feline. Cat registries call the silvery grey coat “blue”, Russian Blue, British Blue, blue point, blue tabby, a usage centuries old. So a grey cat named Blue carries a double meaning for those in the know, and a blue-eyed cat wears the plain sense beautifully. Famous-bearer polish comes from Blue Ivy Carter, Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter, who put this word-name on front pages worldwide.

What Kind of Cat Suits the Name Blue?

Blue suits a serene, self-contained cat, grey-coated first of all, or a cat with true blue eyes and a calm gaze to match. It has a cool, slightly wistful elegance; blue is traditionally the colour of loyalty, in flags and flowers alike.

One syllable, soft-edged, easy to call and impossible to mishear. Blue pairs gracefully with a second name for formal occasions, Bluebell, Blue Moon, while staying simply Blue at home. It is used for male and female cats in roughly equal measure.

How Popular Is Blue for Cats?

Blue ranks #69 in the U.S. News cat chart, while its trimmed twin Blu sits at #47 on Rover’s combined list, take the two spellings together and Blue is comfortably a top-50 cat name in America.
